Minnesota Astronomical Society: Transit of Mercury

  • Eagle Lake Observatory 10775 County Road 33 Norwood Young America, MN, 55397 United States (map)

From the website: On Monday May 9th, 2016 we will be having a special event for viewing the transit of Mercury across the Sun.  The observatory opens at 6:00 am with the transit beginning at 6:13 am.   However, the sun will be less than 3 degrees above the horizon and will not be visible until it reaches a higher altitude.  By 7:30 or 8:00 am the sun should have risen enough for viewing to begin.  There will be plenty of time to view the transit as Mercury makes its way across the sun.  The transit ends at 1:39 pm.

This star party is a ”Cancelled if Cloudy” event. Be sure to check the MAS home page and/or the MAS Discussion Forums for the latest updates if the sky looks questionable for viewing.

The next Mercury transit will be November 11, 2019, after that there will not be another one visible from Minnesota until May 2049
